If you have Full Coverage on your personal auto policy technically you do not have to buy the insurance offered by rental car company.

Most people decline the extra coverage offered by the rental car companies. However, it might be a good idea to buy that extra coverage.

Here are reasons why you SHOULD buy the insurance offered by the rental companies.

1) Loss Valuation. The value of a rental car, according to most rental agreements, is determined soley by the rental car company and may be significantly different from the Actual Cash Value basis used by most insurers. That means your insurance company could value a car at $15,000 and the rental car company $17,000. Guess who picks up the tab?

2) Loss Payment. The rental agreement may require immediate reimbursement for any loss in value beyond normal wear and tear, regardless of fault. This means YOUR credit card may be charged for whatever damages are assessed.

4) Indirect Losses. If a rental car is damaged and out of commission, the rental company may seek reimbursement for lost rentals from you.

5) Administrative Expenses. The rental company may even make the you liable for expenses such a towing, storage, appraisal, and claims adjustment.

For a very long time, consumers have assumed the optional coverages offered by rental car companies was just "profit" padding. And while it certainly may be a profitable item for them, it could also be an expensive one for you - if you decline to buy it.
